Intimate Partner Abuse, Child Abuse, Gender Related Violence

Children and vulnerable adults require the cooperation of all men, women, professionals, institutions and communities working together to support the health and safety of Canadian families in order to give effect to the fundamental human rights of all Canadians to live a life free from abuse, which includes intimate partner abuse, child abuse or gender related violence which is protected under both domestic and international law.

 

In particular, abuse in relation to children:

 

  • Pursuant to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child to which Canada ratified, Canada as a signatory has a positive obligation to take all appropriate legislative, administrative, social and educational measures to protect children from all forms of domestic and family violence which includes both physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment, maltreatment or exploitation, including sexual abuse. (Article 19(1)).
